Dean Rankine – simpsonizing Karla

Dean Rankine is a comics artist who contributes to the Simpsons comic books.  Dean was recently at the re-opening of the local Lego shop in Pakenham, where he was simpsonizing members of the public.

My wife and daughter were excited to have themselves drawn as Simpsons characters by Dean.  These drawings are great!  Dean was able to capture the features of his subjects, while still including a Simpsons cheesy grin.  He was offering standing portraits like these, or head in the jar, Futurama style, drawings.

Next time, I’ll have to get myself simpsonized.  It would be interesting to see how my ugly mug looks with that Simpsons smile!

Below is a quick video I took and edited on my phone of Dean working on Karla’s drawing.

Karla’s self portrait drawing

7 yr old Karla's self portrait drawing

This is just a quick post this morning to show off my seven year old daughter’s drawing.

Sure, I’m a biased parent, but Karla is turning into a very good little artist.  She loves painting and colouring, but even with just a black pen I’m amazed at the detail she can put into her work.

This drawing is a self portrait she did of herself in her school uniform with her hair brushed straight.  She’s even done a talk bubble, showing herself saying “hie” (which is supposed to be “hi”, but she’s still working on her spelling).

When we go out, Karla will often ask our host for paper and something to draw with.  Drawing is becoming her “thing”.

Karla’s is always showing me her latest art work, and asks me to take a photo of it, so I might look at putting together some sort of gallery to look back on in years to come.  Her oldest brother, Josh, was also pretty good at drawing, but we didn’t save much of his work, and I don’t want to make the same mistake with Karla.

My son the artist

It turns out my 15 year old son, Josh, is a pretty good digital artist.  I’m not really surprised though, because he’s always been good at drawing and has said he’d like to get into digital art, animation and games creation.

I was very impressed, though, when he decided to check out his Grandfather’s new Microsoft Surface Pro 3 tablet computer and drew this little masterpiece with the stylus in the OneNote app.  It only took him a couple of minutes, without too much effort at all.

Well done Josh!
