My Last Cancer Update (hopefully)

My most recent posts on this blog have been about my health and battle with pancreatic cancer.  Thankfully the growth was discovered early enough for doctors to be able to totally remove the tumour.  Six months of chemotherapy has hopefully reduced the risk of reoccurrence.  I’m back at work full time, in a new role that I’m enjoying and family life is pretty much back to normal (well as normal as it can be during a pandemic).  The only remnant of my cancer journey is tingling pins and needles in my feet (a side effect of the chemo), so hopefully it stays that way.

As you may have seen in my previous posts, I’ve made a series of videos on YouTube about my cancer journey.  My latest video is hopefully my final cancer update, check it out below…

2018 filmed on my iPhone

I was looking for a video project last weekend, and rather than going out and filming video, I decided to use footage I already had.  I thought it would be a great idea to grab every video clip on my iPhone filmed during 2018, add some copyright free music, and edit it all together into a short YouTube video.  So that’s exactly what I did, and it was actually pretty easy – there was no story to tell, just random clips thrown together to some music.

When I watched the video back though, I realised it needed an introduction, to explain why these non related clips were put together.  To continue the phone theme, I decided to film the intro on my phone too, which actually took longer than editing the main video.  I ended up filming in the doorway of my garage to get reasonable lighting (for the front facing camera) and to get away from household noise (TV, games, kids playing).

So here it is, 2018 as seen through the lens of my iPhone 8.  I like it because every clip is a memory for me to look back on, but hopefully it’s short enough to not bore everyone else.

Karla’s Lego video

Karla’s Lego video

Karla was excited to pick up her latest Lego project.  The “Friends” kit, featuring a Lego ferris-wheel and rollercoaster, had been on lay-buy at the local toy brick store (“I’m Rick James Bricks” in Pakenham) for some time.  Karla decided to use some of her birthday money to pay it off and get it home so she could start building.

We decided to make a video about this Lego project for Karla’s YouTube channel. I was going to set up a time lapse, but decided to film the construction at normal speed, so when it came to the edit I could insert interesting bits amongst the fast motion.  By the time Karla had finished putting all the Lego bits together, we’d shot over seven hours of video!  Some how I managed to squeeze most of that into less than 14 minutes, including a couple of minutes from the shop and in the car.

Adelaide Road Trip

Adelaide Road Trip

My 13 year old son, Brad, is really into football and Essendon in the AFL.  As a treat to him, we made the trek over to Adelaide during the Easter long weekend to see Essendon play the Crows.  I’ve said many times that I don’t mind a good road trip, so a quick interstate trip behind the wheel was a treat for me too.

As I’ve revealed in the last couple of blog posts, I’ve discovered a new interest in making videos for YouTube, so this was a great opportunity to make a short movie with Brad.  Check out our Road Trip video below.  At 15 minutes the film is a bit longer than I would have liked, but it tells the story of two days on the road, budget accomodation and a loosing football match.
